1852-1856  This local post was established by Lemuel Williams. Starting in 1854 this post was operated by his partner William H. Laws.

Genuine 108L3 Type III

Forgeries
Forgery A Type III
1. Embossed
2. The C in AMERICAN has top and bottom serifs.
3. No period after PROPRIETOR
4. The letters in AMERICAN are small

Forgery B Type III - Taylor
1. Not embossed.
3. The M in WM is large.
3. The lettering of WM. H. LAWS has a distinctive S
4. The C in AMERICAN has a top serif that sticks straight up with no bottom serif.
5. The A in “LAWS” has very short legs 
6. The S  in HOUSE is with top and bottom serifs.
7. The M in WM is large.

This is also described as a potential Taylor however
1, No period after the N of NY
2. Right foot of the R is broken
3. The AM is broken
4. The M in WM is tiny

Moens Forgery
1. There is an extra border line around the stamp.
2. The stamp appears in black although I have seen a reddish color
3. The S in LAWS has a flat top and a flat bottom.
4. There are square periods after the N.Y..
5. The bottom curve of the “3” in “13” is fat.
6. The M in WM is thick and clear.


Forgery C Type III - Scott
1. The S in LAW” has a long bottom curve.
2. The C in AMERICAN has a long straight top triangle for serifs.
3, The inscription is not embossed.


Forgery A Type IV
1. The inscription is embossed.
2. The X of EXPRES extends farther to the right than the O on the line below.
3. The serifs on the SS of EXPRESS are very tiny 


Forgery B Type IV
1. The letters are embossed.
2. All of the lettering is smaller Than the original.
3. The O in “P.O.” is an elongated oval 
4. The tip of the shield is longer and more pointed.


Forgery C Type IV - Taylor
1. The letters are not embossed.
2. The period after the H. in “LAWS is very large.
3. The SS in EXPRESS consists misshaped letters
4. There is a dash under the M of  WM
5. The C in CENT is  almost closed and looks like an O
6. There is a dash under the M of  WM
7. The N and the T are connected.


Forgery E Type IV Moens
1. The top of the P in PO is almost filled in
2. The forgery only appears in black
3. The letters are thick
4. There is an extra border line around the stamp.
5. The letters are not embossed
