These stamps are generally found with overprints (seldom legible) of the city or district. Those with no overprint are often reprints and are not uncommon.

Type 1 forgeries
Type I features
"MEDICO" instead of "MEJICO".
"REALES" is used in the inscription of the ½ and 1-real forgeries. This should be "REAL".
The one REALES is often shown as "FEALES".
There is a period after "DOS" and there is too much space between the "R" and the "E" of "REALES".
None of the forgeries have distinct cancels.
Given the errors and cancel, these were made by Torres.
Type 2 forgeries
This type consists of a blue ½ real stamp only.
The top letters are much shorter than the originals.
Type 3 Forgeries
Type 3 only comes in three values and all have cancellations which appear to be part of the printing.
Type 4 Forgeries
They don't have overprints but a variety of grid and mute cancels.
Hidalgo's lips are too prominent.
The letters of the inscription "CORREOS MEJICO" in the upper label are defective.
Several show dividing lines.
These forgeries are very plentiful.
Type 5 Forgeries
The cross hatching to the right of the word "REAL" is very broken
The tip of the nose is a shaped dot instead of being a curve as in the genuine
The lines of shading alongside the outline of the head are mostly separate from one another, whereas in the genuine they tend more toward being joined
Type 6 Forgery
Type 6 is the most dangerous forgery.
It is the only forgery that was engraved and is only found in the ocho realis value. The Gothic overprint is very different from the genuine. Cancels are known which may have been applied long after they were printed.
Type 7 Forgery
Fournier can appear unused and also have a variety of cancels and overprints.
As he obtained forgeries from many suppliers, there are no definitive features.
Many have "FAUX" on the front.
These are attributed to Spiro
The cancels appear to be part of the printing of Type 8 which were printed in five different settings, There are a few known without cancels.
The "C" of "CORREOS" is very open.
The background of the upper label is solid and not comprised of lines.
The letters "J". "I", and "C" of "MEJICO are very thin.
Type 9 Forgery
Type 9 has the appearance of an old man, nothing like the genuine stamps
Type 10 forgery
Only found on green dos reales stamp. It is lithographed on a hard, white wove paper and has no cancels or overprints.
The easiest way to distinguish it is to look at the cravat tie. It is much longer than on any of the other counterfeit
