 Spain 1862 

On July 16, 1862 the 4 cuartos was the first stamp of the new issue that was completed on August 1 with the issue of 2 cuartos, 12 cuartos, 19 cuartos, 1 real and two reales.

The stamps issued were printed in typography at the National Stamp Factory by Mr. José Vare.

It features the head of Queen Isabel II inside a 91-pearl oval.

The stamps are better aligned on the sheet than in the previous issues. The size is 22.5 mm high by 19.4 mm wide with 100 stamps per sheet. Postal validity until December 31, 1863 (4 cu.) and February 29, 1864 (the rest).

Genuine 1862 Ed 57-62

The 4c comes in 2 distinct types

Ed. 58 & 58A. The main difference is the size of the foot of the 4 and height of some letters

Genuine features

The genuine characteristics applicable to the complete series shown above.

1. Shaded spot.

2. Thin line is broken – does not always show up with over inking.

3. The shade line is composed of 2 curved lines sloping downwards

4. The tail touches the body. Not always visible

A very well executed forgery

The key is a secret mark. In the lower left corner element, there is a point of color left of the left leg.

The corner features do not match the original
There are more white spaces in the hair
The bottom letters are slightly taller

1 The line that joins the upper left ornament with the frame is short and does not touch. 

2 The pearl that is under the first "A" of SPAIN is oval. 

3 Lower lip non-existent. 

4 The "C" of CORREOS rounded.

Arrows on each side of the bottom letters point the wrong way
Lower letters are tall
Lacking many details

Grauss Type III Forgery
Well executed
1. The lower letters are shorter, the R is very narrow
2. Top right lion has a large head
3. Top letters are taller and different shape

Grauss Type IV Forgery
1. Very crude design
2. All letters are distorted
3. Very thick shading lines
4. Fused and missing pearls

Grauss Type V Torres Forgery
1. Large letters
2. Tiara is much too large
3. Coarse hair and neck lines
4. Ribbon shaped differently
