A Failed Experiment
Between 1850 and 1875, Spain issued new stamps in 20 different different years.
This was basically an effort to combat forgeries which resulted in generally low production numbers.
Between 1850 and 1875, Spain issued new stamps in 20 different different years.
This was basically an effort to combat forgeries which resulted in generally low production numbers.
The resulting high demand was a great motivator for forgers and completely had the opposite effect on preventing forgeries.
Spanish forgeries were aimed at collectors, especially the rarer issues but most were low value Postal Forgeries meant to deceive the government.
Up to 1900 I would estimate that some 300 different forgeries exist, far outnumbering the genuine issues.
The key difference between Spanish forgeries and those of other countries is their collectability.
They regularly feature on prominent auctions and can command some surprising amounts.

Sperati as we know, was more into quality than quantity.
His favorite countries included France (18 forgeries), Italy & States (34), Germany & States (31) and Uruguay (20).
However, for Spain he produced some 45+ different forgeries mainly of high CV stamps.
NOTE - the images feature the genuine on the left and the Sperati on the right.
