Iran 1876-1880

Nassereddin Shah Qajar Portrait Issue
Information on this series is difficult to find.
This article will hopefully assist in evaluating the originals and some of the possible forgeries and “reprints

1876 Genuine Issue
1876 Sc 27 & Sc 28

1876 Sc 29 & Sc. 30

Reprints
The postmaster Boital, as with the 1870 series, had these reprinted.
There are minor differences that allow for comparison with the originals.
Boital Reprint/Forgery
These can be found perforated and imperforate
Although there are slight differences in the color and details, the key feature is the button on the shirt below the collar. There is none on the original

Forgeries
The main forgery is one attributed to both Fournier and Spiro.
This may be correct as they probably traded and sold each other’s creations.
All the forgeries I have seen have the multi dot square cancel.

Key features are the Heavily shaded eyebrows

Overall these forgeries tend to be deeper in color
The facial features are very different
The numerals are shaped differently
The sun above the lion is larger

I also have this rather crude forgery.
The numerals are thick and shaped differently
The face is crudely drawn
The outer frame has an irregular design
The sword shape is very different

1879-1880 Issues

Genuine Stamps
1879 Sc 41 & 42

1880 Sc 43 & 44

1880 Sc 45 & 46

Boital Reprints
The reprints are darker in color
The image has more detail and the inner frame line is thicker
The key feature is the position of the top plumes of the hat
In the forgery (right) the plumes touch the frame line but not in the original (left)
Note also the thicker round frame lines
The bushy eyebrows
And the different medallion
Given all the differences calling these "reprints" is quite a stretch.
Reprint/Forgeries below

Forgery
This is the only forgery I have.
It does not require any explanation as the face is very crudely executed.
It may be a Torres creation
